The kids were unimpressed with their Stag drawings because it was hard for them to see the full creature hiding in the sweeping lines - heads just did not show definitely enough for their tastes. Perhaps they will come upon their drawings when they are older and appreciate the forms they've drawn. We adults were oohing and aahhing over their drawings.

Dover books publishes the wonderful book by Ken Hultgren on drawing animals. He was a Disney animator who worked on Bambi.

We started out by trying to draw just spooky expressions on a practice sheet. Then we did a practice drawing aiming to express the form of a pumpkin. The final drawing, in crayon, is the pumpkin form over which we draw the expressions, and color.

If spooky is not your thing, you may find as we did, that spooky and sinister expressions are hard to draw. Just what is it in an expression that makes it sinister?
