Daily Figure Inventions - making up figure arrangements on the spot
Topic: Figure Sketches

daily figure invention series

I realized the other day that I must start playing around with the figure. Working from life would be great if models could hold action poses long enough to draw them. Working from photos always seems to look like it is from a photo. Not sure how I will go about this. For now I will have to mess about with inventions. No idea where this may be going.

These were done quickly on 1/4 sheet pieces of card stock in a variety of media - pencil, soft pencil, colored pencil, watercolor.

Apples, Apple Bough Lesson - and adult student work
Topic: Art Class

My demonstrations from the apples & spheres lesson, student work follows - what a bumper crop we got today!

Exercises:

a)Build up a sphere form as if you were winding up tangled yarn, working from the center out. Feel/imagine the form massing as you scribble.

b)Draw a sphere from the outside tracing your pencil round and round that round form. Remember it exists in space. Pretend that paper is space instead of flatness. Imagine imagine pretend pretend!

c)Draw a good circle. Imagine a light source at the upper left hand corner. Lightly draw that edge where the light on the sphere turns to shadow. Layer in 3 layers of tone. Feel the roundness of the form as you layer in the tone. Note the bounce back light on the right side of the sphere in shadow. Lay in the cast shadow - almost like  a saucer.

d) Draw up a red sphere much like the tonal drawing of 'c'. Make sure to leave a bit of highlight.

After the exercises we drew an apple bough working from my photo.
