Let's Draw a March Medley - Kids' Drawing Classes
Topic: Kids Art Class

Press Release:

"Let's Draw A March Medley!" - Children's Drawing Workshops at Rockland Public Library 2011

Rockland - This March children will draw Iditarod Dog Sled Races, Mardi Gras masks, St. Patrick's Day,  Spring's arrival with birds and flowers, and the circus, at Rockland Public Library's ongoing drawing workshops led by Catinka Knoth. Participants follow along with Knoth as she demonstrates how to draw a variety of subjects for March. Husky dogs, mushers and dog sled teams, are motifs from the Iditarod Race in Alaska. The class may also experiment with papercuts of dog teams. Mardi Gras masks and motifs give the chance to draw colorful decorative designs. St. Patrick's Day has it's shamrocks, St. Patrick, leprechauns, pots of gold, rainbows, and Celtic designs. The arrival of Spring gives inspiration to draw  daffodils, crocuses tulips, spring birds, and kites. Traditionally March was when 'the circus comes to town', bringing acrobats, animals, clowns, and tents to draw.  .

Sponsored by local patrons, Wendy and Keith Wellin, the workshops, for age 6 and up, and the young at heart, are free and open to the public.  Children age 10 and under should be accompanied by an adult.  All materials are provided. Ongoing workshops meet every Tuesday, 4-5 pm., Community Room, Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St., hosted by Friends of Rockland Library. FMI - Jean Young, children's librarian, 594-0310.

Raisin Olive Oil 'Shortbread' Step-by-Step

Step-by-Step Photos of Raisin Olive Oil Shortbread by Catinka Knoth

Above is the list of scribbled down approximate ingredients. The photos show my second making of this big 'cookie' and give an idea what the measurements are and the order. My cooking is unorthodox in that I like to do it by sense (feel and look) rather than exact measurements. In some places "t" refers to a cutlery teaspoon, other places it is a guess. Here "T" is my guess at a tablespoon.  The photo page show it better.

Instead of using a big oven for just one cookie, I cooked this on the stovetop in a cast iron fry pan with a little rack inside - covered. I used wax paper. Parchment paper would be better. It cooked/baked 18 minutes? What temp? That point where it is hot but won't burn right away! That differs on every stove. Just a bit lower than medium?

The idea for this came when I learned through the work of Fran Costigan, whose cookbook specializes in dairy-free and vegan desserts,  that one can bake sweets using Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). What a revelation. I had to try it right then. If this were true, then one could make an almost healthy cookie. I have tried light olive oil in dessert baking, but I don't do it often enough and the oil ends up going to waste.  EVOO, however, is a staple in my cooking - always on hand. And yes, it worked. This is really just a big cookie rather than a shortbread. It is too chewy to be a shortbread. It is just enough of a sweet treat to satisfy the desire for a treat.

"Let's Draw February Celebrations!" - Children's Drawing Workshops
Topic: Kids Art Class
Chinese dragon drawing

Press Release:

Rockland -  Children will draw images from February's celebrations and traditions at Rockland Public Library's ongoing drawing workshops led by artist Catinka Knoth. Participants draw along with Knoth as she demonstrates how to draw  subjects for Groundhog Day,  Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year,  Mardi Gras, and possibly President's Day.  Participants will  draw a wide range of motifs. Valentine's Day cards often have motifs such as hearts, birds, cupids, lace, ribbons, and roses. Mardi Gras motifs include masks, King cakes, doubloons, jazz instruments, jester, tricorn hat, and beads. Chinese New Year 2011, celebrated for 15 days, is the Year of the Rabbit. Participants may explore papercut rabbit designs, Chinese dragons, and Lion Dancers.  Knoth suggests that participants may bring in related books and pictures as  possible reference material for the demonstrations. Knoth also reminds people that this class is also for the young at heart.

Sponsored by Wendy and Keith Wellin,  the workshops, for age 6 and up, are free and open to the public, with all materials provided. Children age 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Ongoing workshops meet every Tuesday, 4-5 pm, Community Room, Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St.,  hosted by Friends of Rockland Library.  FMI - Jean Young, children's librarian, 594-0310.
